The brief
What Viyal Kothi needed
Viyal Kothi needed an identity that felt warm and personal rather than corporate. As a boutique homestay, its appeal lies in the character of the building and the sense of staying in a family home with history. The logo had to communicate that heritage to travellers browsing booking sites, while staying simple enough for a signboard at the gate, printed stationery, and the small profile images used on Instagram and Google Maps.
The idea
How the mark works
The mark is an illustrated facade of a traditional kothi, drawn with the arched openings and a crowning chhatri that define so much of Udaipur's older architecture. Rather than a detailed rendering, the illustration uses clean, confident lines so the building reads clearly even at small sizes. The arches give the logo rhythm and symmetry, suggesting calm and hospitality, while the chhatri adds a recognisably Rajasthani silhouette at the top. Placed above a serif wordmark, the facade acts as a visual doorway: the guest sees the home before they see the name, which is exactly how a homestay is first experienced.
Colour
A deep maroon was chosen for its association with Rajasthani textiles and old painted walls, giving warmth without feeling loud.
Typography
A classic serif wordmark echoes the building's heritage and balances the detail of the illustration with quiet, readable letterforms.
